Websites and integrations for Norway's largest road project

Customer: Sotra Link

We built new websites for Sotra Link Construction and integrated new functionality to help them meet their information needs.

Work: Web development, integrations, web design

By integrating driving time measurements and real-time travel time display, the Sotra Link website provides travelers and other stakeholders with important and useful information in an understandable and easily accessible way.

Background:

Sotra Link is an international company building the new Sotra link, Norway's largest road project. The main objective of Sotra Link's website is to provide the population with useful and relevant information about the work in progress at any given time. At the same time, a good website will reduce the pressure on the organization, which receives fewer inquiries.

When we started working with Sotra Link, they already had a profile and a website. The website focused on presentation of the project, and was created before the work started. But as commissioning approached, the need also changed. the need changed. This has also happened along the way, and more functionalities have been added.

Solution:

The original pages were built on a basic CMS. To enable integrations and future development, we rebuilt the site in WordPress. Our focus was on creating a clearer information flow for each business area and making it effortless for users to reach the right person in the organization.

1. Driving time measurements - route estimate

Technical foundation: We have developed an advanced module for driving time measurements based on the Norwegian Public Roads Administration's DATEX system. DATEX (DATa EXchange) is the European standard for exchanging traffic information between different actors, based on XML format. The system uses antennas along the road that register the passage of vehicles with AutoPASS tags.

Functional area: The module covers key routes in the area where the new Sotra line is being built. It displays real-time data updated every five minutes, based on anonymized data from the AutoPASS system. The algorithm calculating the travel times considers several factors and discards very short and very long travel times to ensure accurate estimates.

Data source: The data comes from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration's DATEX publications, which are available as open data under the Norwegian License for Public Data (NLOD). The system uses version 3.1 of the DATEX standard to ensure optimal compatibility and data access.

2. Travel time display

User experience: Based on the travel time measurement module, we have developed an interactive travel time display where users can select the start and end points of their journeys. The system displays real-time data based on the last 5 minutes of traffic measurements.

Personalization: A key feature is the ability to add favorite routes. When users mark a route as a favorite, the system remembers this choice and presents the same route when they next visit the website. This creates a personalized experience that is especially valuable for daily commuters.

Technical implementation: The module integrates seamlessly with the DATEX data stream and presents the information in a user-friendly way. It handles complex traffic algorithms and presents the results in an easily understandable format. The website and its associated modules represent a comprehensive digital ecosystem that supports both the operational and communication needs of Norway's largest road infrastructure project. The solution combines advanced technical development with practical utility for both the project's stakeholders and the general population in the surrounding area. The modules demonstrate the ability to integrate complex public data systems with modern web technology and create valuable services that improve both project visibility and operational efficiency. The Sotra Link website and its associated modules represent a holistic approach to digital communication and service provision for large infrastructure projects. The project demonstrates technical expertise in data integration, user experience and modular system architecture, delivering tangible value solutions for both project execution and public information access.

3. Vacant positions

Functionality: We developed a complete recruitment module that allows Sotra Link to advertise jobs directly through the website. The module includes a user interface for publishing job advertisements and an application system that allows candidates to submit applications electronically.

Workflow: Users can browse through available positions and submit applications directly via the website. The applications are automatically delivered to Sotra Link, which then handles the further process of screening, interviews and follow-up of candidates.

Value creation: This module streamlines the recruitment process for a major infrastructure project and provides Sotra Link with a direct channel to potential employees in the region. It eliminates the need for third-party platforms and provides full control over the recruitment workflow.
